The State government hiked the compensation paid to the families of those who die in rain-related incidents to Rs.2 lakh even as the death toll touched 34 on Monday.
It also increased the relief amount payable to the families for damage to huts, death of cattle and livestock Houses, roads
and agricultural fields were inundated following heavy rain in
Erode district
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa issued the orders after a detailed review of the situation with officials at the Secretariat.
Since the north-east monsoon set in on October 24, 34 persons have died in wall collapse, lightning, landslides and incidents of drowning and electrocution.
In a release, the Chief Minister stated that she has increased the relief payable to the families of those who die from Rs.1 lakh to Rs.2 lakh. An assistance of Rs.1000 would be given to each of the families that evacuated and accommodated in safe centres. This would be in addition to food, 10 kg rice, a dhoti and a sari and a litre of kerosene that were being distributed.
Ms. Jayalalithaa said that 179 huts were completely damaged and 705, partially. For the former category was being given Rs.5000, the latter would be paid Rs.2500. She had ordered immediate distribution of the assistance.
A total of 162 heads of cattle had perished in the rain. The assistance payable to their owners has been increased from Rs.10,000 to Rs.20,000. For loss of goats, the owners would get Rs.2000 instead of Rs.1000. For loss of livestock compensation has gone up from Rs.30 to Rs.100.
Udhagamandalam-Kothagiri-Mettupalayam roads the damaged roads in Chennai and other districts would be temporarily repaired. After the monsoon, they would be relaid.
