House speaker is that New Hampshire’s most influential newspaper was an early booster of Ronald Reagan and Pat Buchanan ahead of their
primary wins, and four years ago, threw its weight behind
John McCain as he resurrected his
campaign with a victory in the state.
The
Union Leader went for Steve Forbes in 2000. That year, publisher
Joe McQuaid wrote that Forbes “believes in what he says and he says it. His two main rivals, on the other hand, seem much more interested in what the news media say about them than in their own message.”

Drew Cline, who appeared on
CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday, drew a parallel between the Manchester paper’s endorsement of
McCain in 2008 and its endorsement of
OGingrich in the 2012 GP contest.
