Osama bin Laden's longtime lieutenant, Ayman al-Zawahri, has warned the United States of a coming Muslim rebellion in retribution for the killing of the al Qaeda leader. The statement came in a video posted to a website on Wednesday.
In what appeared to be his first public response to bin Laden's death, the Egyptian-born Zawahri vowed to press ahead with al Qaeda's campaign against the US and its allies. He warned Americans not to rejoice at bin Laden's death, and condemned US forces for burying bin Laden at sea, a move opposed by senior Muslim clerics as un-Islamic. Zawahri also praised the citizen revolts in his native Egypt and other Arab countries, calling on Pakistanis to follow suit.
