Chile Volcanic Ash Cloud Worsens Airline Routes After 150 Flights Canceled

Volcanic ash from an eruption in southern Chile increased flight cancellations across the region and prompted organizers of a summit of economy ministers and central bankers in Argentina to delay their gathering.

British Airways Plc. canceled departures out of Buenos Aires today, one day after about 150 flights to and from Argentina and Uruguay were scrubbed by companies including Lan Airlines SA (LAN), United Continental Holdings Inc. (UAL), and Aerolineas Argentinas SA, according to airport operator Aeropuertos Argentina 2000 SA. More cancellations are expected today, the company said.

A gathering today of economy ministers and central bank chiefs from the Union of South American Nations, or Unasur, was canceled after a light coating of ash powdered Buenos Aires from the eruption of the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcanic complex in Chile that began June 4. Airspace across the southern Patagonia region of Argentina, from the ski resort town of Bariloche to Tierra del Fuego, remains closed.

Runways at the two international airports in Buenos Aires were being cleaned last night to remove ash, which can damage airplane engines. In Bariloche, waves of the dusty debris washed up along the shoreline of Lake Nahuel Huapi, part of the country’s oldest national park that stretches to the mountainous border with Chile.

Some salmon farmers along Chile’s Pacific coast moved stocks to safer areas, industry association SalmonChile said yesterday.

The Chilean government’s emergency service, known as Onemi, maintained an alert for communities in the Los Rios and Los Lagos regions as volcanic and seismic activity continued. The volcano could erupt for an additional 10 days, Chilean Mining and Energy Minister Laurence Golborne said June 8.

The Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcanic complex previously had major eruptions in 1921-22 and 1960, according to the Washington-based Smithsonian Institution.
