Manoa resident Alvin Wong is a one in a million man. Well actually he is one out of more than 300 million - he was just named the "Happiest Person in America".
"It feels like there is a burden imposed on me that I have to be happy all the time now," Wong said.
The owner of a health care management firm was caught off guard when a reporter from the New York Times told him he was chosen.
"You go to be kidding me," said Wong.
He was selected after a recent Gallup Poll announced Hawaii beat all other states for the highest wellbeing in the country. A criterion was formed to find the happiest person in the nation.
"It was a tall, Asian-American, male, living in Hawaii that was an observant Jew, so I fit the bill I guess," Wong said.
The 5-foot-10-inch, 69-year-old who converted to Judaism to marry his wife Trudy says the phones have been ringing and his inbox has been bursting since the times posted and printed the article.
"This is unbelievable."
Alvin and his wife along with their labradoddle Sam have hosted many students as supporters of the East West Center they had no idea how many people would come out of the wood work.
"And we've been getting emails from Israel from Pakistan from Nepal from Bhutan," said Wong.
The father of two who was featured in a Jewish Fathers book says happiness comes from humility.
"Laugh at yourself,” Wong said. “Be able to bring humor into everything."
