Brain Scans 'To Predict Future Criminals'


Scientists may soon be able to identify potential criminals using developments in brain research on children as young as six months, an expert has claimed.

Psychologist Dr Adrian Raine said recognising problems in a child's limbic system, which controls emotion, will allow scientists to predict future offenders and psychopaths.

"Seeds of sin are sown quite early in life," Dr Raine told a science conference in the US.

The British scientist, who is at the University of Pennsylvania, said three year olds with a poorly-functioning amygdala, a key part of the limbic system, were more likely to commit crime 20 years later.

Further research presented at the conference showed emotional problems, like "callous-unemotional" (CU), were hereditary.

CU traits are associated with a lack of emotion, empathy and guilt and are linked to persistent bad behaviour in young children.

After assessing more than 9,000 twins between the ages of four and 12, Dr Nathalie Fontaine concluded that genetics played a fundamental role in the emergence of CU traits, especially in young boys.

Dr Raine said that a time would come when "we are going to be able to predict reasonably well which individuals at a modest age say eight to 10 years old are predicated to become criminal offenders".

The scientist added people would have to decide whether or not to intervene at an early age to stop crime despite possible mistakes in predictions.

Omega 3 - a fatty acid that helps build brain cells - was identified as being able to reduce aggressive behaviour in children based on studies that have shown giving supplements to prison inmates cut serious offending by a third.

"Its very simple - bad brain, bad behaviour… improve brain functioning and you will improve behaviour," Dr Raine said.

Media-Tech Meet-Ups in Vegas


Media and technology companies cozied up to each other at the Consumer Electronics Show this week, touting their collaborations on stage and flaunting their friendships at private parties all along the Las Vegas Strip.

Talks progressed on a number of potential deals. News Corp 's 20th Century Fox continued talks with hardware makers, including Samsung Electronics Co., to license a slate of Fox TV shows to tablet computers and the application stores on Internet-connected TVs, said people familiar with the situation.

The deals would allow consumers to either download or stream some Fox shows, which include the "Family Guy" and "The Cleveland Show." Samsung declined to comment.

But media and technology executives who met behind closed doors this week encountered a range of issues that are still keeping both camps apart. They suggest that even as media companies experiment with more distribution models, they are going to continue to be cautious about striking deals with technology companies as they sort out the impact of rapid technology changes on their businesses.

In the red-hot tablet world, media companies say that talks with technology companies have grown more complicated because of the range of partners involved in launching new products, including telecom providers, hardware makers and software makers like Google Inc.

In some instances, media companies say it is difficult to work out each company's agenda and who is ultimately responsible for making sure the content gets to consumers.

Both sides also still disagree on whether certain technologies, such as televisions that display content from the Web, are ready for prime time. One media executive whose company has been talking to hardware makers about providing content for their Internet-connected television services says the company hasn't struck a deal with players like Samsung and Vizio Inc. because it believes their software isn't sufficiently sophisticated.

Kevin Lee, vice president of Smart TV partnerships at Samsung, said in a briefing with reporters that content partners are eager to partner with Samsung. "There is no big issue."

Vizio CEO William Wang declined to comment in an interview Friday.

Most of all, media companies say they still want more money.

"The media is worried about business models," said Marni Walden, executive vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless. The company was at the conference seeking video and other content to distribute on tablets and phones.

Ms. Walden said Verizon is seeking deals for tablets, such as the Motorola Xoom, that in some cases resemble the four-year $720 million deal it recently struck for exclusive rights to NFL video content on smartphones.

TiVo CEO Tom Rogers said in an interview Friday that media companies, upbeat about the fact that the ad market is strong, aren't embracing new ad opportunities created by devices that port the Internet to television. "Media companies are not really getting ahead of it," he said.

But the partnerships between content and tech companies have come a long way as the lines between the industries have blurred. Years ago, the big media CEOs who occasionally walked the floor of CES were misfits. This week, they were part of the action.

In a Thursday morning keynote, Time Warner Inc. CEO Jeffrey Bewkes appeared on stage with Verizon Communications Inc. CEO Ivan Seidenberg, sketching out a vision of "TV Everywhere" in which video content would be freed from the TV and distributed to smartphones, tablet computers and other mobile devices over speedy and protected wireless iInternet connections.

Behind the scenes, potential partners had a lot to work through. Jonathan Miller, News Corp.'s chief digital officer, said one challenge is deciding which of the numerous device makers—and which of the different aggregators that build apps for lots of different devices—to strike deals with.

The problem is particularly acute across the Android ecosystem, he said, citing the variety of manufacturers, carriers and Google itself. "Who am I to deal with for different aspects of what we create?" Mr. Miller asked. "A big thing for us is to really get that map in place."

While a lot of the action this week involved tech companies courting media companies, the wooing is going both ways. In meetings in his hotel suite, News Corp. Chief Executive Rupert Murdoch demonstrated the company's soon-to-be-launched newspaper for tablets, called the Daily, for a variety of executives, including Microsoft Corp. Chief Executive Steve Ballmer, according to people familiar with the matter.

Sony: 3D TV for everyone


LAS VEGAS--I haven't found a company more enthusiastic about 3D technology than Sony. Chief executive Howard Stringer (below) and other executives with the Japanese electronics giant adopted the theme "3D goes personal" for its news conference.


Beyond shipping the expected lineup of 3D high-def TVs, Sony will also ship a 3D-enabled Vaio laptops and 3D-capable versions of its Handycam and Bloggie video cameras that could let users make their own 3D movies. And it will launch a full-time 3D network called 3Net with IMAX and Silver Spring-based Discovery Communications.

Those consumer cameras, incidentally, will not require viewers to wear the usual active-shutter glasses to see the results in 3D on their own (tiny) built-in screens. They'll start at $250, for the 3D Bloggie.

Sony also showed off prototypes of a 3D visor you could wear to watch 3D content on a plane, as well as a portable Blu-ray player that would join those cameras in being "glassless." It's working on making glassless 3D work on full-sized TVs too.

That's a laudable goal--but I can't imagine that the prospect of an upcoming shift in formats will help this technology get any more momentum in the market.

Another unintentional acknowledgment of trouble came in Sony's announcement of an upcoming HDTV that will be able to receive Time Warner Cable programming without a separate cable box. If the industry had ever gotten its act together about standardizing on cable interfaces, you wouldn't have a "Time Warner-compatible TV," you'd have a cable-compatible TV.

Meteor shower tonight: first for 2011


The first meteor display of 2011 – the annual Quadrantid meteor shower – will hit its peak tonight and, weather permitting, could dazzle observers across the Northern Hemisphere, skywatchers say.

The Quadrantid meteor shower is expected to peak at about 8 p.m. EST (5 p.m. PST, 0100 Jan. 4 GMT), with some forecasts of 100 meteors per hour at the height of the "shooting stars" display.

The show will be best in parts of Europe and Asia but unfortunately peaks too soon for U.S. skywatchers to expect more than a handful of shooting stars per hour.


As an added perk, the moon won't interfere with the view of the meteor shower because it is in its "new" phase, when it is passing between the Earth and sun and appears from Earth to be completely dark.

"There won't be any annoying moonlight to spoil the fireworks display," said amateur astronomer Jane Houston Jones in a skywatching tips video released by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. "This could be the best shower of the year."

Quadrantid meteors up close

Unlike other notable meteor showers, which have peak observing periods that can last days at a time, the most dramatic view of the Quadrantids lasts a few hours. That, combined with the fact that the meteors pass by during wintertime in the Northern Hemisphere – when cold temperatures and other weather conditions can be obstacles – sometimes makes the first meteor shower of the year difficult to observe.

One piece of advice: Bring blankets and get comfy. You'll want to dress against the cold December night and sit in a comfortable chair if you plan to spend several hours searching for Quadrantid meteors.

"In general, the higher your latitude the better the observing situation," advised Robert Lunsford, operations manager for the American Meteor Society, in a viewing guide. "Unfortunately, in higher latitudes the weather is usually cloudy this time of year. If not cloudy, the bitterly cold temperatures are a constant danger to the exposed observer."

The meteor shower will appear to originate from the northeast corner of the constellation of Bootes, the Herdsman.

If you're not familiar with the Bootes constellation, look instead for the more recognizable constellations of the Big Dipper and Little Dipper. The Quadrantids should appear to emanate from a point between and below the two star patterns.

Astronomers suspect the meteor shower was created by a near-Earth asteroid called 2003 EH1, which could be the debris of a comet that broke apart. The Quadrantids got their name from a now-defunct constellation called the Quadrans Muralis (or "Mural Quadrant"; a quadrant is an astronomical instrument similar to the sextants used for navigation today).

"What makes this year so special is that the moon is new on the night of the peak, so there will be no interference from moonlight," said Bill Cooke, an astronomer with NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office, according to the website Spaceweather.com.



Don't miss it: Jan. 4 solar eclipse

That new phase of the moon also sets up another skywatching event – this time, during the day: a partial eclipse of the sun tomorrow (Jan. 4).

Solar eclipses occur when the moon passes between the sun and Earth as seen by observers on the ground. When the moon and sun line up directly, it causes a total solar eclipse. But sometimes the moon obscures only part of the sun's disk, creating a partial solar eclipse.

A partial solar eclipse is what will occur Tuesday. It will be best seen by skywatchers in Sweden, though observers elsewhere in Europe, the northern half of Africa and western Asia should also see the event if the weather allows.

It is extremely important to remember never to look directly at the sun with binoculars or your unaided eye. Doing so can damage your eyes' retinas and cause blindness.

The safest way to view a solar eclipse is to project the sun's image either through a pinhole or through binoculars or a telescope equipped with special filters. At no time should you look through the pinhole or binoculars or telescope at the sun.

The Jan. 4 solar eclipse will be the first of four partial solar eclipses in 2011, with the others occurring in June, July and November, according to NASA's eclipse website. Two total lunar eclipses will also occur, in June and December, NASA officials said.

Canadians view more YouTube videos and more Wikipedia pages than anyone else


NEWS1130 reports that Canadians spend more time online than any other users in the world, according to data from comScore.com.

Canadians also view more YouTube videos and more Wikipedia pages than anyone else, NEWS1130 said.

About 68 per cent of the Canadian population is online and the average user spends about 42 hours a month surfing the web. Users in Israel were next in line at about 39 hours per user per month.

YouTube says Canadians are the biggest users of the site per capita, and watch an average of 147 videos a month. That's about 50 per cent more than the average American.

Canadians also read 16 Wikipediapages every month, though Germans are not far behind us at 15 pages per month.

Entire nation gets a 'ringside seat' to total lunar eclipse


If you step outside late tonight into early Tuesday morning, you may notice the moon looks like a luminous rotten orange. It's a total lunar eclipse that will be visible to everyone in North and Central America, including Alaska and Hawaii.

"We've all got a ringside seat to this one," says Alan MacRobert, editor of Sky & Telescope magazine. "We'll be watching it together."

During a lunar eclipse, the Earth lines up directly between the sun and the moon, so there is no direct sunlight to hit and reflect off the moon's surface. The only light that reaches it is "filtered and bending through our atmosphere," MacRobert says. That gives it the color of "all of the world's sunrises and sunsets" together.

The total eclipse will last for 72 minutes, a deeper "night within a night," as he puts it. The moon will be partially eclipsed for about an hour as it goes into and out of the Earth's shadow. The total eclipse will last from 2:41 to 3:53 a.m. ET.

"It's going to take a long time to watch the whole eclipse, about 3½ hours," says Rebecca Johnson, editor of StarDate magazine.

The color the moon takes on during the eclipse depends on what's in Earth's upper atmosphere, or stratosphere, says Fred Espenak, a scientist emeritus with NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and eclipse specialist.

"Volcanoes throw up sulfur dioxide, and when that gets to the upper atmosphere in the stratosphere, it combines with water vapor, creating a smog of sulfuric acid that reddens the light even more. So the more volcanic activity you have on Earth, the more it darkens and reddens the eclipse."

Richard Keen, an atmospheric scientist at the University of Colorado-Boulder, says the stratosphere is fairly clear right now, so this eclipse will be pretty light, most likely bright red to bright orange. "So it will be very colorful," Espenak says.

Most places on Earth see total lunar eclipses every three to five years. They tend to "occur in clumps," Espenak says.

There will be three over the next 12 months: Tonight, June 15 and Dec. 10. The June eclipse won't be visible from North America, and next December's will be visible only in the western part of the continent. "But the one coming up is ideally situated for all of the United States," he says.

In past ages, "these things spooked the bejesus out of people before people understood what caused them," MacRobert says.

Google explores the human body with HTML5



Google has just soft-launched its latest browser experiment, the Google Body Browser, which is basically Google Earth for the human body.

Think of it as a three-dimensional, multi-layered browser version of those Visible Man/Woman model kits. Or a virtualized version of Slim Goodbody, if you will.

Google showed off the app at the WebGL Camp. WebGL is a cross-platform low-level 3D graphics API that is designed to bring plugin-free 3D to the web. It uses the HTML5 Canvas element and does not require Flash, Java or other graphical plugins to run.




If you visit bodybrowser.googlelabs.com in a supported web browser, you'll get a three-dimensional layered model of the human anatomy that you can zoom in on, rotate and search. WebGL support hasn't hit mainstream browsers, but the beta versions of Google Chrome, Safari and Firefox all support it.



Once you've got a compatible browser, visiting the Body Browser home page shows off the human body. You can adjust the various layers of skin, muscles, tissues and the skeletal system. What's really cool is that if you type in an organ or bone or ventricle system, you are taken directly to that area in the anatomy, zoomed in. You can turn labels on or off and the app supports multitouch so users of trackpads (Magic or otherwise) or multi-touch mice can zoom in with ease.

This is a pretty cool display of new web technologies. Presumably the use case is for the healthcare industry, but educators and students can benefit from this kind of demonstration too.

Now playing in a sky near you: Winter meteor show


Flaming rocks are hurtling toward the Earth upon the arrival of the annual Geminid meteor shower, one of the biggest of the year.

The peak of the week-long shower will come just before dawn Tuesday, but the shooting stars were visible across the world late this past weekend, says Rebecca Johnson, editor of StarDate magazine, which is published by the McDonald Observatory, the University of Texas research unit near Fort Davis, Texas.

Where skies are clear, the viewing will be best before dawn Tuesday. "It starts to get light an hour before sunrise, so any time before that is going to be a good time to look," Johnson says.

Those who'd rather stay up late than get up early might want to wait until the moon sets around midnight on each night during the shower.

"You can still see meteors when the moon is up, but it will be better when the moon has set," Johnson says.

The peak will hit at 6 a.m. ET on Tuesday, Johnson says.

"If you're brave enough to brave the frigid, arctic cold that's prevailing in most of the Eastern part of the country, that's when you'll see them," says Bill Cooke, an astronomer at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, in Huntsville, Ala.

Meteor showers can be unpredictable in the number of fiery paths sketched across the sky, but the Geminids are among the most consistent. They're expected to generate between 60 to 80 meteors an hour, "about one a minute," Cooke says.

Meteors aren't really falling stars. In the case of the Geminid shower, they're tiny pieces of debris breaking off an asteroid called 3200 Phaethon as it orbits the sun. Although the shower was first seen in the 1860s, the asteroid wasn't discovered until 1983.

The Geminids carry a whiff of mystery. Most well-known meteor showers, such as the Perseids and the Leonids, come from comets, which are "big, dirty snowballs," in Cooke's words.

When comets get near the sun, the heat turns the ice into gas, freeing some of that dirt, which is then pulled into Earth's orbit and falls through the atmosphere. As the debris burns up, it creates the brilliant streaks we see as meteors.

The Geminids come not from a comet but an asteroid, "a big hunk of rock," Cooke says.

Exactly why 3200 Phaethon has so much material trailing behind it to burn up in our atmosphere is unclear.

Even if 3200 Phaethon is a clump of rock bits, which is one kind of asteroid, the Geminids are many hundreds of years old, so those bits should have long since been lost, "and yet (they are) still throwing stuff off. It's a weird meteor shower," Cooke says.

For those who can't make it out Tuesday morning, the meteors will be visible tonight and a day or two after the peak, just not as plentiful.

It's "a great shower that many people never see" because they come during cold weather, Cooke says. "The Perseids get all the press. It's much nicer to be out on a warm August night than to be freezing your rear in December."

Android Sees 300,000 Daily Activations, Rubin Says





















More than 300,000 Google Android phones are being switched on each day, according to a Twitter tweet from Android creator Andy Rubin. Let's see what Steve Jobs has to say about that.

Google Android creator Andy Rubin said Dec. 8 that there are now 300,000 Android phones being activated each day.

The stat, which Rubin delivered during this rare Twitter tweet late Wednesday, came two days after Rubin reiterated at D: Dive into Mobile that Google was seeing more than 200,000 activations of Android smartphones each day. Rubin's tweet was seconded by Android developer Dan Morrill.

Google's count of Android activations has been vociferously by Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who skewered Google's claims of Android being open and sporting 200,000 daily activations in October.

Jobs countered that Apple is seeing 275,000 daily activations of devices based on iOS, including the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Apple sold more than 14 million iPhones in the fourth quarter, but Android handsets are also flying off shelves at a more modest clip of 9 or 10 million per month.

ComScore said Android market share comprises 23.5 percent of U.S. smartphone sales, trailing Apple at 24.6 percent and RIM at 35. 8 percent.

Strong sales of Samsung's Galaxy S devices and Motorola Droid X and Droid 2 have carried Android, with Samsung recently taking the crown of top Android handset seller in the U.S. from Motorola.

Samsung has shipped more than 3 million Galaxy S devices since the Vibrant, Captivate, Epic 4G, Fascinate and Mesmerize launched this past summer.

Samsung is set to roll out the Nexus S Android 2.3 device Dec. 16 from T-Mobile and Best Buy. The device is equipped with a NFC (near field communications) chip that could facilitate sensor-based mobile payments.

Moreover, Android phone users are proving super hungry for data, downloading applications and doing other things with their gadgets besides making calls, according to Arieso.

At Dive into Mobile, Rubin also hinted that he had discussions with Nokia, prompting speculation that a deal is in the works to get Android on smartphones from the world's top handset maker.

"The company has new leadership [referring to CEO Stephen Elop]. They are evaluating lots of alternatives. I'm open-minded and a big proponent of Android.

Rubin also unveiled a prototype Motorola tablet based on the Android 3.0, or Honeycomb build. Both the tablet and OS build will appear in 2011.

Commercial rocket launch, splashdown a success





The first of what NASA hopes will become a fleet of privately built rockets and capsules successfully launched from Cape Canaveral on Wednesday morning in a major test for the commercial space industry. After twice circling the globe, the capsule landed in the Pacific as planned three hours later.

The successful splashdown marks the first time that a commercial company launched a rocket and capsule into space and brought the spacecraft safely back to Earth.

The landing was announced on the Twitter account of Space Explorations Technologies Inc., or SpaceX, the start-up company that has pioneered the new era of commercial space travel. A recovery team was at the capsule - built to be reusable - within 20 minutes of splashdown, suggesting that it was on target for its landing.

The Falcon 9 rocket built by SpaceX was on its first full test flight. Its Dragon capsule was empty and unmanned, but plans are to fill it in the months ahead with cargo - and ultimately with astronauts - to transport to the International Space Station.

NASA's deputy administrator, Lori Garver, said after the splashdown that the administration was delighted by the success and that "the path to and from the space station is going to be this: a partnership between private companies and government to get the job done most effectively."

The flight is an important moment for President Obama and his administration's hopes to expand commercial space efforts in low-Earth orbit as a way to free up NASA funds for missions to send astronauts much deeper into space and ultimately to Mars.

SpaceX, founded in 2002 by Elon Musk and run from California, successfully launched a Dragon 9 rocket in June, but that test was done without a real capsule. Musk, who founded and sold the online payment company PayPal and is also behind development of the Tesla electric car, said before launch that he rated the chances for a successful mission at about 60 percent.

After the splashdown, Musk said he was in "semi-shock."

"There's so much that can go wrong and it all went right," Musk said. His next challenge is a Dragon capsule rendezvous with the space station that is scheduled for next year.

The Falcon 9 rocket is a pipsqueak compared with the space shuttle it will partially replace - measuring 157 feet with the capsule and weighing 735,000 pounds. The much larger shuttle was needed to fly parts up to the $100 billon international space station, but the fleet is being retired because of its age and because its job is largely done. Each shuttle flight costs about $1 billion, while the entire NASA contribution so far to SpaceX has been $253 million, according to NASA officials.

Google launches Chrome OS operating System




Chrome OS is to be launched as a trial programme that users can register for online and will eventually be offered pre-installed on a range of computers made by major manufacturers such as Acer and Samsung.

Although the initial plans are for a trial programme that will only be available on a small scale, in due course Google's new operating system could be offered as a standard option when consumers buy laptops or PCs.

Writing on the Google Blog, Linus Upson and Sundar Pichai wrote that the "The test notebooks exist only to test the software they are black, have no branding, no logos, no stickers, nothing. They do have 12.1 inch screens, full-sized keyboards and touch pads, integrated 3G from Verizon, eight hours of battery life and eight days of standby time. Chrome notebooks are designed to reach the web instantly".

The Google engineers added that "simply by logging in, all of your apps, bookmarks and other browser settings are there. Setting up a new machine takes less than a minute. And even at this early stage, we feel there is no consumer or business operating system that is more secure."

The BBC reported that Google had delayed its own branded laptop, but company sources said that the firm could release a model with Google branding in due course.

Secret Military Mini-Shuttle Headed Back to Earth





A miniature robotic space shuttle launched from Cape Canaveral in April has completed a nine-month classified mission for the military and will be headed for a landing as early as Friday, Air Force officials said on Tuesday.

The vehicle, known as the Orbital Test Vehicle or X-37B, is expected to land at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California between Friday and Monday, depending on weather and technical considerations, the Air Force said in a statement.

The project, started by NASA in the late 1990s and later adopted by the military, is intended to test technologies for a next-generation space shuttle.

The military is looking at the space plane as a way to test new equipment, sensors and material in space, with the intention of incorporating successful technologies into satellites and other operational systems.

The Air Force imposed a news blackout on the X-37B's activities while in orbit, though it was tracked by amateur satellite-watchers throughout its nine-month mission.

The X-37B looks like a space shuttle orbiter, with a similar shape and payload bay for cargo and experiments.

But it measures 29 feet, 3 inches in length and has a 15-foot (4.5-meter) wing span, compared to the 122-foot (37-meter) orbiters with wing spans of 78 feet.

Unlike NASA's space shuttles, which can stay in orbit about two weeks, X-37B is designed to spend as long as nine months in space, then land autonomously on a runway.

The Air Force plans to fly its second X-37B vehicle this spring. The vehicles were built by Boeing Co's advanced research lab, Phantom Works.

Scientists find way to reverse aging in mice

Scientists in Boston have made an astounding discovery, taking aging mice and turning them young again, like tiny little Benjamin Buttons.

Just like the title character in the Hollywood film version of "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," the mice appeared to not only stop aging but grow younger.

Molecular biologist Dr. Ronald DePinho at Harvard Medical School in Boston was able to pull off the feat by playing with "telomeres" -- the protective DNA caps on the ends of our chromosomes.

The caps, which have long been implicated in aging, prevent our chromosomes from "fraying" and the genes inside them from "unravelling."

Scientists have long known that a little bit of our telomeres erodes each time our cells divide. Previous research has shown that people with longer telomeres tend to live longer, whereas those with shorter telomeres suffer more from age-related diseases, such as Alzheimer's.

A few years ago, DePinho and his research team devised a way to engineer mice so that they lacked a working copy of the gene that regulates the production of telomerase, which is an enzyme that strengthens telomeres and whose production declines over time.

Instead of dying at three years old, the genetically engineered mice died at about six months. By the time they died, they had become infertile, their coat hair had turned grey and they had developed age-related conditions such as osteoporosis.

DePinho wondered whether he could reverse the aging in the mice if they suddenly began making telomerase again.

So he took a group of engineered mice and added back the telomerase gene, but left it inactive. His team then allowed the mice to age for six months, until they were the equivalent of 80-year-old humans. They then gave the mice a drug that "switched on" the telomerase gene.

One month later, not only did the new production of telomerase stop the aging process in the mice, it appeared to actually undo the premature aging so that the mice became the physiological equivalent of young adults.

Even DePinho was surprised at how effective the experiment was.

"We expected to see a slowing or a stabilization of aging. Instead, what we found was a dramatic reversal in aging," he told CTV.

"The shrunken brains increased, new neurons were formed, the coat hair was restored to a new sheen."

DePinho notes that the treated mice went on to have a normal lifespan. They were simply healthier and biologically younger.

DePinto and his colleagues stress that the study was a "proof-of-concept" experiment, designed to show that changes to telomerase can affect aging. There are still many questions to answer before an experiment can be tried on humans.

For example, some research has shown that telomerase seems to help cancer tumours grow faster. DePinho says his team didn't observe any cancers in the mice, but then the telomerase was activated for only one month.

"This teaches us something fundamental about aging: that aged tissue -- even very aged tissue -- retains the ability to rejuvenate itself," he said.

DePinho says it's possible the method could be used to treat people with rare genetic premature aging syndromes. Whether the technique could help reverse normal aging still remains to be seen. Still, he says the findings were worth sharing and appear in the journal Nature.

"The results were so dramatic that we wanted to get them out to the research community as soon as possible so we could inspire the research community to move forward on these findings," DePinho said.

Mammals Grew Big After Dinosaurs Died Off: Analysis





Mammals began to grow much larger after dinosaurs became extinct 65 million years ago, a new study suggests.

An international team of researchers analyzed the fossils of major groups of land mammals on each continent and found that their size increased from a maximum of about 10 kilograms (22 pounds) when they shared the Earth with dinosaurs to a maximum of 17 tonnes (18.7 U.S. tons) after dinosaurs became extinct.

"Basically, the dinosaurs disappear and all of sudden there is nobody else eating the vegetation. That's an open food source and mammals start going for it, and it's more efficient to be an herbivore when you're big," study co-author Jessica Theodor, an associate professor in the biological sciences department at the University of Calgary, said in a university news release.

The findings also show that the global ecosystem is able to reset itself relatively quickly.

"You lose dinosaurs 65 million years ago, and within 25 million years the system is reset to a new maximum for the animals that are there in terms of body size. That's actually a pretty short time frame, geologically speaking. That's really rapid evolution," Theodor said.

Discovery launch pushed to Dec. 17 or later




Discovery's final launch will not be before Dec. 17 after NASA decided more tests were needed before launching the shuttle into space for one last mission.

The decision to push the launch closer to Christmas came Wednesday after the agency reviewed repairs and engineering evaluations associated with cracks on two U-shaped aluminum brackets on the shuttle's external tank.

"The managers decided the analysis and tests required to launch Discovery safely are not complete," it said. "The work will continue through next week."

As a result, the agency rescheduled its launch status meeting to Dec. 2. It was originally planned for Nov. 29.

NASA also said that if the Discovery is cleared for launch on Dec. 17, the preferred time is approximately 8:51 p.m. ET.

The flight was grounded earlier this month after a hydrogen gas leak was initially discovered during fuelling.

The 39th and final flight of Discovery was originally due to launch on Nov. 1, but several technical delays and one weather-related delay forced NASA to push the flight back.

The shuttle will carry seven astronauts and space station supplies during its mission

Apple I computer sells for $174K at London auction





A rare example of Apple's first computer, the Apple I, in "superb" condition sold for $174,000 at an auction in London on Tuesday.

Italian businessman and private collector Marco Boglione made the winning bid, which came to about $210,000 after tax, by phone Tuesday at Christie's auction house in London, the Associated Press reports. Prior to the auction, Christie's estimated the computer would sell for between $160,000-240,000. When it was released in 1976, the Apple I sold for $666.66.

The Apple I computer, of which only 200 were made, has become a rare collector's item, as only 30 to 50 units are believed to still exist. The auctioned unit was listed as a "superb example" and came in its original box with a signed letter from Apple cofounder Steve Jobs.

Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak, who hand-built each of the Apple I personal computers, attended the auction, offering to add an autographed letter to the lot. Wozniak told reporters the auction was a historic moment for his work.

According to the AP, the auction included other pieces of technological history, such as an Enigma code-making machine and writings of Alan Turing, who is considered "one of the founders of modern computing."

"Today my heart went out as I got to see things auctioned off like the Turing documents and the Enigma machine — and the Apple I," said Wozniak after the auction. "It really was an important step, (even though) I didn't feel that way when I designed it."

Google has designs on you




Not content with involvement in almost every facet of your online life, online search giant Google now wants to get into your wardrobe. The company launched a site called Boutiques.com that attempts to assess your style and automatically find the clothing and accessories that suit your
taste.

The service works by having customers fill out a so-called Stylyser quiz, which analyses taste in styles, dresses, tops, bottoms, shoes and designers. Users are also shown a variety of styles and asked to comment on which they like or hate. Further refining the selection of garments are proprietary Google algorithms that take into account how patterns, silhouettes and colours work together.

The site is an outgrowth of Like.com, a visual search shopping engine, which was acquired by Google in the summer. Boutiques.com is currently only accessible in the US, though Google said it does plan to roll out the site in other countries and add a site for men.

Ask.com Retires from Search Battle



If you've been on the web for almost a decade now then you'd know that Ask.com was one of the initial search engines which were equivalent of Google back then. Okay, does Ask Jeeves ring any bells? According to AFP reports, Ask.com is laying off 130 staffers located in U.S. and China. The company plans to refocus on its Question and Answer service that involves real humans to answer questions. Looks like Ask.com is going to be pretty literal.

Leslie Cafferty, a spokeswoman for Ask's owner IAC, said the move was a part of a strategic shift by Ask to focus on its Q&A service rather than the traditional search, which is dominated by Google with over 66 percent share of the U.S. search market. But now, Ask is going to concentrate on its new Q&A based service that was introduced back in July this year.

Last week, Ask.com launched its Q&A services for mobile devices starting off with an iPhone App. The company plans to go big on the Q&A service which is deemed to compete with the Quora.com which was founded by Ex-Facebook CTO and VP of Engineering - Adam D'Angelo with Charlie Cheever who led the Facebook Connect and Facebook Platform.

But the demise of Ask.com won't stop any more search engines to give up. We recently reported about Blekko search engine based on Slash technology and there might be many more to come. Not every search engine would come out to compete with someone as big as Google or Microsoft Bing. As of now, let's observe a moment of silence for Ask.com's search engine and look forward to its Q&A service.

Scientists learn physics behind how cats drink water without getting wet



Prepare to learn of another remarkable attribute: Four researchers have painstakingly filmed, analyzed and determined how it is that a cat can drink water while (unlike a dog) keeping its chin and whiskers pleasingly dry.

The answer involves an exquisite demonstration of physics: The cat, in effect, balances the forces of gravity against the forces of inertia, and so quenches its thirst.

While a dog curls its tongue like a ladle to collect the water and then pull up what it can, a cat curves its tongue under and slightly back, leaving the top surface of the tip of the tongue to lightly touch the liquid. The cat then raises its tongue rapidly, creating an upward mini-stream of water. The cat snaps its mouth shut and the water is captured before the countervailing force of gravity pulls it down.

An average house cat, the team found, can make four of these mini-streams per second.

"What we found is that the cat uses fluid dynamics and physics in a way to absolutely optimize tongue lapping and water collection," said Jeffrey Aristoff, now at Princeton University but who was one of the four researchers who began the study out of curiosity at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

"Nobody had ever studied it before, so nobody knew how the water went from the bowl into the cat's mouth," he said. Not surprisingly, they found that cats lap at precisely the rate that would get them the most water for the effort expended. The team's results are described in an article released Thursday by the journal Science.

As with most basic scientific research, the ultimate usefulness of this knowledge is uncertain. But it is not, the researchers say, hard to imagine some downstream applications, perhaps in robotics.

Something as complex as a cat drinking water doesn't get unraveled and turned into a paper at the nation's top science journal overnight. It was almost four years ago that Roman Stocker, an associate professor at MIT's department of civil and environmental engineering, became interested in how his cat, Cutta Cutta (or "Stars Stars" translated from an Australian aboriginal language), drank. His enthusiasm spread to Aristoff, Sunghwan Jung, now an engineer at Virginia Tech, and Pedro Reis, a physicist who works on the nature of soft solids at MIT.


"Science allows us to look at natural processes with a different eye and to understand how things work, even if that's figuring out how my cat laps his breakfast," Stocker said. "It's a job, but also a passion, and this project for me was a high point in teamwork and creativity. We did it without any funding, without any graduate students, without much of the usual apparatus that science is done with nowadays."

The four researchers went to several zoos to observe and film tigers, jaguars, lions and ocelots, and went to YouTube to find videos of bobcats, cheetahs, leopards and lionesses drinking in the wild.

They found the same basic drinking mechanism in all the cats, though the larger ones (with larger tongues) slowed their lapping to best take advantage of the physics at play - that is, the balance between upward movement of the water set off by the cat's tongue (the inertia) and the gravity pulling the water down. A lion, Aristoff said, laps about two times per second.

"In the beginning of the project, we weren't fully confident that fluid mechanics played a role in cats' drinking," said Jung, whose research focuses on soft bodies, such as fish, and the fluids surrounding them. "But as the project went on, we were surprised and amused by the beauty of the fluid mechanics involved in this system."

Aristoff explained the dynamics at work: You're in the shower and turn on the hot water. The steam starts to rise, and that upward flow lowers the pressure levels at your knees. The result is that the inside of the shower curtain will billow in toward you, unless you have some weight attached to the curtain to stop it. That interplay of motion and pressure parallels the dynamic that quenches the cat's thirst.

Although the work on cat drinking was done for professional pleasure - it wasn't funded by a grant, and the only expense was high-quality video cameras - the researchers said there could be useful implications gleaned from their "fundamental" research.

Engineers, for example, are moving into the field of "soft robots" and are working on the basic properties of nonmetallic parts that may play a role. Aristoff said there's great interest in creating robots that can walk on water, and this research could help.

This new cat-drinking research follows by 70 years related work done by Harold "Doc" Edgerton, who first used strobe lights to capture stopped action on film. His photography, which uncovered some of the secrets of how cats drink, was featured in an Academy Award-winning short called "Quicker'n a Wink." The four current-day researchers used equipment at an MIT center for high-speed photography named after Edgerton, who was a much-honored MIT professor of electrical engineering for five decades.

Call of Duty: Black Ops - the critics seem to love it

Call of Duty: Black Ops 

You may have noticed that a game called Call of Duty: Black Ops was released yesterday. We did the odd article on it. Best of all was Keith's review which gave the game 5/5. But how did the rest of the media rate the game?

Very well actually. As you can see below Black Ops has reviewed consistently well across the board although some have questioned the originality of the single player game. Anyway, here is a selection of reviews and quotes..

As CoD players we have travelled the world, killing people, following orders, hunting down madmen … many of us have had enough. Call of Duty should go out on a high, or at least come back totally re-invented. Perhaps that's what we'll get with Modern Warfare 3. But for now, and for the next two-years of multiplayer engagement, revel in this game's mastery of its well-trodden domain.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops will be a tough act to follow as it's easily one of the best games of this, or any year. It is even, dare we say it, better than Modern Warfare 2.
